Ardmore, Pennsylvania lies in what is known as the “Welsh Tract”, an area of land that William Penn had given to a group of Welsh Quakers in the 1680’s.  The Welsh Quakers traveled to the New World in hopes of religious freedom and to create a self-sustaining community.  During the 1690s, a settler by the name of John Roberts purchased a 500-acre plot along the stream flowing through Ardmore.  There, he set up a mill and founded what is known today as Mill Creek.  Through his mill, Roberts brought to Ardmore plenty of commerce, which brought along new settlers, making Ardmore a culturally diverse and industrious community by the mid-eighteenth century.

At the time of the Revolutionary War, Philadelphia was the largest city in the United States.  To sustain such a large and flourishing community, Philadelphia depended on many of the suburbs and farmlands to the west of the city to provide produce and other goods.  For that reason, many roads were established and in 1792, the highway laid through Ardmore became America’s first toll turnpike.

Ardmore considers itself to be the most distinguished out of all of the Philadelphia suburbs due to its diverse culture, its attractive business district and quaint community.  Residents of Ardmore enjoy a myriad of public parks and a pedestrian friendly downtown area, lined with boutique shops, small cafes, and award winning restaurants.  Locals of Ardmore and the surrounding areas partake in many community activities that celebrate the arts and Ardmore’s eclectic cultural background.  Being close to Philadelphia yet set in a small town atmosphere, Ardmore offers visitors and locals an urban city lifestyle with a small-town appeal.

Philadelphia’s diversions and destinations are also easily accessible. SEPTA’s Paoli/Thorndale Regional Rail Line puts Ardmore residents in Philadelphia within 20 minutes.
