Philadelphia, in Greek meaning “The City of Brotherly Love”, is not only America’s 5th most populous city but it is also considered to be one of the most affordable. Typical homes in Philadelphia are historic colonial and Federal-style brick row homes.

Even though Philadelphia is known for its historic homes, in recent years, the city has been inviting well-known architects and real estate moguls to refurbish, renovate and construct new, yet affordable, residential spaces with modern conveniences.

Chestnut Hill was once part of a German settlement that was laid out by Francis Daniel Pastorius and was originally known as Sommerhausen and Crefeld, which was part of Cresheim.  The town’s main purpose was being the gateway between Philadelphia and the farmlands on the outskirts of the city.  Because of its location on a hill, it provided visitors with scenic views and overall cooler temperatures, making it a summer vacation destination for many during the late 18th century.

During the Civil War, Chestnut Hill was home to the Mower U.S. Army General Hospital, which at that point was America’s largest army hospital.

Later, during the 19th and 20th centuries, Chestnut Hill became known as one of Philadelphia’s suburbs.  Even though it was, and still is, a part of the City of Philadelphia, its tree lined streets and residential homes gave the appearance of being a small town.

Chestnut Hill is known for containing the architectural works of a variety of renowned Philadelphia architects from the 19th and 20th centuries.  Even though Chestnut Hill is officially a part of the City of Philadelphia, it does not give off the impression of a bustling city.  The layout of this neighborhood more reflects that of a suburb and gives residence the peace of living in a quaint town with the benefits of being able to access an urban lifestyle.  Because of its proximity to downtown Philadelphia and its convenient trolleys, busses and trains, Chestnut Hill is a popular residency for many businessmen and women who commute into Philadelphia’s business district.

Chestnut Hill is connected to the City of Philadelphia via the SEPTA public transportation system.  There are several trolleys and bus lines that allow passengers access to downtown Philadelphia.  Residents and visitors may also use the Regional Rail, the Chestnut Hill East Line and Chestnut Hill West Line, to access other parts of Philadelphia.
