History

What was once the country home of Stephen Girard is now one of the quaint residential areas of the city of Philadelphia. Girard was known as one of the richest men in the United States, and when he passed in 1831, he left his land, which he named Gentihommiere, to the City of Philadelphia. He left it to the city in hopes that the city would establish a school in his honor for poor orphaned boys. On top of that, he wanted the Board of Trustees to develop 481 homes, which became the Girard Estate homes.

The Girard Estates is most known for being the home of Rocky Balboa, who bought the 2313 S. Lambert Street home with his winnings during Rocky II.

The Community Today

Homes in the Girard Estates neighborhood were built between 1906 and 1916. Unlike most of South Philadelphia, which are primarily row homes, the Girard Estates homes were built in the architectural styles of Bungalow, Prairie, Mason, Jacobean Revival and Colonial Revival.

Transportation

The Girard Estates district is connected to the rest of the City of Philadelphia by the SEPTA public transportation system. Several bus routes and the Market Frankford subway line allow passengers from Girard Estates to access other parts of the city.
