Philadelphia, in Greek meaning “The City of Brotherly Love”, is not only America’s 5th most populous city but it is also considered to be one of the most affordable. Typical homes in Philadelphia are historic colonial and Federal-style brick row homes.

Even though Philadelphia is known for its historic homes, in recent years, the city has been inviting well-known architects and real estate moguls to refurbish, renovate and construct new, yet affordable, residential spaces with modern conveniences.

Southwest Center City, also known as Graduate Hospital, was originally a part of Moyamensing Township.  It wasn’t until after the Civil War in 1870 when the neighborhood began taking shape.  By the 1920s, the community became a culturally diverse residential area comprised primarily of working class citizens who worked mostly in South Philadelphia and on South Street.

The Southwest Center City neighborhood is nicknamed Graduate Hospital because of its ties to medical care being offered in this district.  In 1889, the Philadelphia Polyclinic served as a local hospital.  By 1916, the Graduate Hospital was founded and has been offering rehabilitation and long-term acute-care under the University of Pennsylvania Health System ever since.

After much renovation and rebuilding, the Southwest Center City district is known to many Philadelphians as an up and coming affordable hot spot, perfect for young professionals, new families and even students.  Most housing opportunities in Southwest Center City are two story row homes on quaint streets and smaller alleyways giving the area a small-town feel amidst an urban backdrop.

The Southwest Center City district is conveniently located close to many of Center City’s main attractions including Rittenhouse Square, fine dining restaurants, and the shopping districts located on Walnut and Chestnut streets.

Those traveling from The Southwest Center City district via SEPTA bus routes as well as the Market Frankford subway line can easily access Center City Philadelphia.
