During the Revolutionary War, British soldiers used the Germantown district as their housing quarters.  As a result, in 1777, the Continental Army attacked their Germantown base in what is known today as the Battle of Germantown.  After the war and after George Washington became president, he and his family sought temporary residents in the Deshler-Morris House in Germantown to escape the yellow fever epidemic that struck Philadelphia in 1793.

Germantown is also the home for notable entertainer, Bill Cosby, as well as the inventor of the game Monopoly, Charles Darrow.
